Chapter 7
In this week’s discussion about marketing your social media page, we did a deep dive into Snapchat. For starters, “Snapchat is a mobile camera app on which people or brands can send photos or videos called snaps to their friends and followers. A snap opened by a follower or friend is only available for a set time limit from 1 to 10 seconds; however, the Snapchat Stories feature allows users to add snaps to their stories, which makes them available for up to 24 hours” (Canello). Snapchat is a popular social media platform that most people from the age of 13-35 use. Snapchat’s original name was Picaaboo until the developers changed the name to Snapchat. Snapchat was created July 8, 2011, at the time I was a 6th grader in middle school. I can personally remember when Snapchat first started a buzz and no one knew how to use it. Now in 2021, millions of people from across the world use Snapchat.
Not only do people use Snapchat for personal use, but also use the application for promoting business. “Today Snapchat helps businesses reach a unique audience, raise brand awareness, increase consideration, and drive action. Using Snapchat will not only increase a brand’s “cool factor,” but, as indicated, it is also a great way for businesses to reach a younger demographic as this is the social network where high school and college students are hanging out” (Canello). Snapchat would be a great tool to use when promoting a business to a younger audience since Snapchat is mostly used for a young audience. For example, if you are a designer for fashion-forward clothing and most of your clothing is appealing to a younger crowd, using Snapchat for promotion would most likely be your go-to application. The advantage of using self-promotion on Snapchat is that their ads get twice as many views as Facebook. Overall, Snapchat is a growing app that millions of people use daily and more features to the app allow people to promote many different businesses.
