Chapter One

Chapter One of Principles of Social Media went in dept about the development of social media and how much of an impact it is in today’s world. A point in the chapter that caught my attention the most was the advantages and disadvantages of social media. There’s a few advantages and disadvantages that I want to talk about more deeply. As we all know, social media is a very popular platform everyone uses daily. Platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook are the gold prints of social media. A lot of people use social media for different reasonings and gain something out of the platforms.

One of the biggest advantages of social media is marketing and business. The best way to promote a business, product, brand, etc is done through social media. Instagram is a major platform where people promote many different businesses and products. Instagram developed promotion features on their app to help people who own businesses and want to promote their product a lot easier than having to go through the hardships of advertising. The feature also has a time length for promotions where you can have a promotion go on for days, weeks, and even months. The longer the promotion, the more money and awareness the owner gains.

One big disadvantage of social media is addiction. In today’s generation, the youth (ages between 10-25) use social media the most. Social media addiction could cause mental health issues and trouble within the youth. The addiction gets so bad to the point where people commit suicide due to self-comparisons, cyberbullying, and much more. This is a serious issue because incidents like this can cause harm to the new generation.  Kids at the young age of 11 kill themselves due to their social media addiction and having too much free time spent on social. Overall, social media has its pros and cons, but it’s up to us on how we use it and what type of messages we put out there to gain popularity for the content.
